Former first lady Michelle Obama continues to be one of the most influential figures not only in politics but in everything else all over the world. Recently, a county in the state of Georgia has voted to rename an elementary school after her.
The Clayton County Board of Education made a vote to rename the South Clayton Elementary School into the Michelle Obama STEM Elementary School. The board voted last week with seven votes in favor of the former first lady while two votes went to Civil Rights leader, the late congressman John Lewis who passed away this year. This is not the first time Michelle has had an educational institution named after her, and in Georgia as well, as there is a Barack and Michelle Obama Elementary School in Atlanta.
The former first lady’s ties are also rooted in Clayton County in Georgia through her great-great-great-grandmother. With this new vote, they will have to wait for Michelle to say yes to the proposal. According to board member Ophelia Burroughs, should the former first lady decline, then they may choose to name the school, which is set to open in July 2021 in Jonesboro, after the late congressman.
“He is a true hero of the civil rights movement, and it would have been so fitting at this time. But we had many, many votes, for Michelle Obama. It is very fitting to have a school named after her here,” said another board member Judy Johnson, who voted for Lewis.
Previously, Michelle made another blunt attack towards Donald Trump in a 24-minute video detailing her final argument for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The former first lady criticized Trump, even without calling him out by name, for fear-mongering, especially about Black and Brown Americans, and his claims that minority groups will destroy the suburbs with violence and intimidation. Mrs. Obama noted how the protests calling for racial justice have been peaceful, yet the administration and its allies seem to pin the blame on the protesters as a way to distract from their own shortcomings.
“What the president is doing is, once again, patently false,” said Michelle. “It’s morally wrong, and yes, it is racist. But that doesn’t mean it won’t work.”
